About Boorowa
Boorowa is a small country town of approximately 1,400 people located between Yass and Cowra in New South Wales, in Ngunnawal, Gundungurra and Wiradjuri countries. In addition to its rich Aboriginal history, the town is widely known for its Irish heritage, personified by Irish political convicts Edward “Ned” Ryan (1786-1871), and his cousin Roger Corcoran (1787-1859) who came to the region in the 1820s.
About Karen SmithKaren Smith holds a B.A. (Hons) (Australian National University), Master of Educational Leadership (University of Canberra), Diploma of Family History (University of Tasmania), and is currently undertaking a Master of History degree.Karen has self-published two books about Boorowa:
Great Battle in a Snowstorm: Boorowa and District’s Spanish Flu Victims (2020). This book investigates the impact of the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1919 on Boorowa and district in terms of medical personnel, affected individuals, their families, and the community at large.Boorowa, My Love: How a Town Sought Justice for Three People in Peril (2023). This creative history book is written in the first person by the fictional Frances Mary Sheehan, a women’s journalist with The Burrowa News, a newspaper serving Boorowa and surrounding townships. Frances is a principled person who sees the world in black and white, but three criminal cases that actually took place between 1942-1950 - a murder, an alleged attempted murder and a manslaughter case – profoundly change her. In all three cases, the accused were acquitted, and Frances seeks to understand why this was the case.Karen is passionate about family history, not just the facts, but the historical reasons that guided the behaviour of our ancestors. Having an enhanced understanding of our family history can lead to greater insights about our own motivations, interests, and talents.
